Available on MY21 vehicles with MIB3 are trip statistics and "Hello Volkswagen", an in-vehicle voice control that can recognize natural language inputs for vehicle radio, navigation, telephone, and other media functions.
The VW Car-Net skills are available for Amazon Alexa for almost all new Volkswagen cars. Owners should first open the skills page for their vehicle model in the Alexa app. Then, link the skill to their VW Car Net account. This will enable them to speak to Alexa from their home, asking her to send remote commands. For example: "Alexa ask Car-Net for me to honk my car horn."
Car-Net is available for vehicles with factory-installed navigation devices. It can locate off-street parking information, and send destinations or points-of-interest directly to the car. ParkopediaTM's Parking Information feature makes it easier for owners to locate off-street parking information. The Navigate tab of the app allows users to click on the "P" icon and view available parking spots, either within the immediate area or near a Point of Interest. Clicking on a location will show the address, hours and prices. If the car has a navigation system, users can send the location to it by clicking on the "Send To My VW" button.
Vehicle Health Reports allow owners to have easy access to diagnostic information. Each month, reports are generated automatically and sent to the owner's email address. Owners can also request updates through the mobile app. Car-Net will notify customers when scheduled service is due and provide a simple way for them to make an appointment with a dealer.
Roadside Call Assist and Family Guardian can offer added peace of mind, regardless of who is driving. Speed Alert alerts the owner when the vehicle exceeds a pre-set maximum speed limit. Boundary Alert informs the owner when the vehicle travels beyond a predetermined virtual boundary. Curfew Alert alerts the owner when the vehicle is being driven during curfew. You can control who gets notifications through the Car-Net app. Users can designate primary and secondary users with different levels of control and functionality. Notifications may be sent as text messages, emails or push notifications directly from the app. Roadside Call Assist can be contacted at the touch button of the wrench button if the vehicle is inaccessible.
Car-Net users can get discounted rates from some top auto insurance companies by enrolling in DriveView(tm). Car-Net users can monitor their driving habits by using this program to track activities such as night driving, hard brakes, excessive speed, and idle time. All of these factors contribute to a driving score that is visible in the mobile app.
Car-Net Safe & Secure, a yearly subscription service, includes information assistance, emergency assistance, automatic crash notification, anti-theft alert, and stolen vehicle location assistance. The annual subscription costs $159, plus taxes and fees. It automatically renews each year at the end, unless cancelled. Information Assistance--accessible through the i-call buttons within the vehicle--allows drivers to talk to Car-Net agents for support needs such as account services and points of interest. The SOS button on the vehicle can be used to access emergency assistance. If a cellular connection is possible, the Car-Net service centre can connect the driver with them. They can direct emergency responders at the vehicle's location, as well as notify the Emergency Contact. If a cellular connection is possible, Automatic Crash Notification will notify the operator. This operator can then quickly contact emergency responders in case of a collision. Anti-Theft Alert will send a push notification to the operator if the vehicle's alarm goes off. Stolen Vehicle Locator Assistance uses Car-Net in order to assist law enforcement in locating the vehicle if it is stolen.
Car-Net Hotspot allows passengers to access the internet simultaneously with up to four connected devices. This includes compatible tablets, smartphones and gaming devices as well as laptops and other devices that are 4G LTE-enabled. Customers of Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile who have an existing mobile data plan may add their Volkswagen vehicle to their monthly bill. Car-Net Hotspot offers additional subscriptions to improve the navigation and infotainment experience of MY21 VW owners who have a factory-installed MIB3 system. The Plus Nav package ($49/year), which requires an active data plan, allows drivers to access online route updates and traffic reports as well as fuel prices and parking information. The Plus Speech package ($9/year), which offers advanced voice control using natural language, and Plus Online Radio Package ($8/year), offers online radio with over 30,000+ stations and podcasts. Access to media streaming apps, such as iHeartRadioTM or TIDAL, is free of charge. Both require an existing account.
An advanced version of EA888's four-cylinder engine powers the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan. The EA888 four-cylinder turbocharged direct injection engine is a modified version of the standard four-stroke cycle. This engine offers a remarkable combination of power, efficiency and responsiveness. The engine incorporates the Budack cycle, which improves combustion efficiency. It produces 184 horsepower at 4,360 rpm. Maximum torque is 221 lb-ft and can be obtained starting at 1,600 rpm. All Tiguan trims come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
All Tiguan trims come standard with a Start/Stop system. This system helps improve fuel economy. This technology prevents the engine from running while the brake pedal is held down (e.g., waiting at a red signal). The engine will restart when the brake pedal is released.
Front-wheel-drive Tiguan models have 15.9 gallon fuel tanks, while models with 4Motion all wheel drive have 16.4 gallon tanks. The EPA estimates that front-wheel drive models will get 23 mpg city driving, 29 mpg highway driving and 25 mpg combined driving. Models equipped with 4Motion all wheel drive have a 21 mpg rating in city driving, 27 on the highway, and 24 mpg combined driving
The Tiguan's athletic performance is matched by an impressive brake system. The front has 13.4-inch diameter vented discs and the rear has 11.8-inch diameter solid discs. To optimize wet-weather braking, the system includes a brake disc drying function to remove water from the rotors. All Tiguan models include an electronic parking brake.
Driving Mode Selection. The Driving Mode Selection feature is standard equipment on all 2021 Tiguan models. There are four options to choose from: Normal, Sport, Eco, and Individual. Sport offers a more dynamic throttle response and tighter steering, and more spirited ACC settings. Eco mode optimizes shift points and throttle response for better fuel economy. The driver can adjust the steering, throttle, ACC and climate control settings individually.
Tiguan can have the 4Motion system with Active Control all-wheel drive. 4Motion's latest generation system activates before wheelspin occurs. This helps to eliminate traction losses. This is achieved by an advanced control function that adapts to specific driving conditions. The front wheels are driven when there is a low load, or coasting. When this happens, the rear wheels are decoupled to help save fuel. The center differential is activated by an electro-hydraulic oil pump and allows the rear wheels to be engaged in fractions of seconds.
Active Control. Active Control is available on all Tiguan models equipped with 4Motion all wheel drive. This allows the driver to choose specific vehicle profiles depending on driving conditions. There are four options: Onroad (Snow), Offroad (Custom Offroad), and Custom Offroad. Additional options are available within the "Onroad" setting: Normal, Sport and Comfort. These options alter the operating parameters of drive systems such as the engine, transmission and steering. It consists of a rotary knob and a push button. The user interface is simple to use. The knob can be turned to activate the different drive modes. Pushing the button will trigger a pop-up menu that displays on the screen. This allows the driver to adjust the Onroad mode.
The default setting is On Road. The default setting is On Road. Here the Tiguan adjusts the drive distribution between both axles to account for road conditions. The button can be pressed to bring up the screen with the driving profile selection screen. This screen gives the driver the option of choosing between "Normal", Sport, Eco, or Individual drive modes. Each setting allows for different tuning parameters, including engine control, gearbox and steering, as well as optional ACC.
Snow mode has a flattened response curve for the accelerator pedal to reduce unintentional or excessive wheelspin. The transmission also upshifts earlier to optimize traction. The Traction Control System (TCS), which communicates with the accelerator pedal as well as individual wheel speed sensors, helps to reduce engine power when it detects slippage. In straight-line situations, the system's sensitivity is less sensitive to ensure adequate power transfer. Cornering is where traction is crucial, however, the limits of the system are more strict.
Off Road mode has similar transmission and throttle characteristics to Snow mode. However, manual control of transmission shifting via Tiptronic (r) is available. Only the throttle kickdown switch can force a downshift. In this mode, the Start/Stop system will be disabled and ACC will continue to function normally. To avoid false positives, the ESC system is turned off. Hill Descent Control activates automatically on gradients greater than 10%. It can operate at speeds of between 1.2 mph to 19 mph and is easily adjusted via throttle or brakes.
The wheels lock up quickly with the Offroad ABS programming. This allows for the brake effect to increase by allowing a small amount of ground material (such as gravel and sand) time to build up. The car is still steerable, but the stopping distance has been reduced.
The Custom Offroad mode allows the driver the ability to modify the steering, engine, and gearbox behavior as well as Hill Descent Assist or Hill Start Assist.
The Tiguan has both active and passive safety systems to protect its occupants. The standard Tiguan has six airbags (front and side airbags to protect front passengers, and side curtain airbags to protect outboard seating positions), as well as a variety of electronic safety systems such as the Anti-lock Braking System and Electronic Stability Control.
Volkswagen's Automatic Post-Collision Breaching System is a standard feature of the 2021 Tiguan. This is based on the idea that a collision can be more than one, immediate action. It's a series of events that occur after the initial impact. The most important of these could cause additional collisions. In certain crash situations, the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System can help to address this issue by applying brakes when an airbag sensor detects a primary collision. This could potentially reduce residual kinetic energy, which in turn could lead to additional damage.
Volkswagen's Intelligent Crash Response System is also available in the Tiguan. It shuts off the fuel pump and unlocks the doors. If the car is involved with certain types of collisions, it switches on the hazard lamps.
The 2021 Tiguan features a wide range of driver assistance technology to meet American drivers' needs. The features available include: Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist); blind spot monitor (Side Assist); rear traffic alert; Adaptive cruise Control (ACC); Lane Keeping System; Lane Assist; Park Distance Control; High beam Control (Light Assist); overhead view camera (Area View).
Front Assist is standard on all Tiguan models. It warns drivers about potential frontal collisions (Forward Collision Alert) and, in certain cases, provides automatic braking assistance (Autonomous emergency brake).
Forward Collision Warning alerts the driver if the vehicle is exceeding 18 mph. It does so within the limits of the physical system. A driver can also be notified by an automatic jolt to the brakes if they are in danger. Autonomous emergency brake is activated to slow down the vehicle if the driver fails to stop. Autonomous emergency brakes activate when the vehicle is moving below 18 mph, and without any prior warning. Braking Support will increase the brake pressure if the driver applies the brake pedal but does not brake sufficiently.
All Tiguan models come standard with Blind Spot Monitor (Side Assistance). Blind Spot Monitor scans the surrounding traffic using two radar sensors located at the rear of each vehicle. It is designed to alert drivers to the presence of vehicles in the adjacent lanes. The system uses a flashing LED symbol inside the mirror housing to notify drivers if a vehicle is detected in a blind area. Even if the driver doesn't use a turn signal the mirror housing will still illuminate if there is a vehicle in the blind spot. This system alerts drivers only in certain situations. Oncoming vehicles, stationary objects and vehicles further away than the vehicle do not trigger warnings.
Combining Lane Assist (standard for SEL trims) the system will not only alert the driver with a flashing LED symbol if a vehicle passes through the blind spot but, within the limits of the system will also warn the driver if the driver tries to steer outside of the lane.
Adaptive cruise control (ACC) is standard on SE models and higher. It uses a forward-facing radar to maintain a predetermined speed and maintain a distance from the vehicle in front. The multifunction steering wheel has buttons that allow the driver to set the speed and spacing. They can also adjust or cancel the ACC function using those buttons. However, the accelerator can be used to override the ACC function. The ACC function is always cancelled by pressing the brakes. The central multifunction display displays all ACC-related messages.
The system maintains the speed set when the road ahead of the vehicle is clear. Tiguan models equipped with ACC can match a vehicle in the front and stop if it does. ACC will automatically resume to the predetermined speed if the vehicle in front moves within three seconds. If the car is stationary for more than three seconds, the driver may resume ACC control by pressing either the accelerator pedal or "resume" button at the steering wheel.
Standard on SEL Premium R/Line models is Lane Assist (Lane Keeping System). Lane Assist actively steers the vehicle to keep it in its lane when the vehicle travels above 40 mph. The system will alert the driver if the driver is not able to keep the vehicle in its lane for a specified time.
If the system cannot detect lane markings properly, it will not engage. The Lane Assist system won't engage if the turn signal was set before the vehicle crosses a lane mark. You can bypass the system by using minimal force on the steering wheel.
Park Distance Control's Maneuver Braking is a component of the Park Distance Control system. It is designed to help avoid or mitigate collisions between vehicles while being maneuvered. The system can be activated between 1-6 mph. The system can automatically apply the brakes to prevent or minimize collisions when it detects stationary objects. You can deactivate the system at any time by touching the display or in the set-up menu.
Drivers will benefit from better visibility thanks to two final driver assistance features that are standard on SEL Premium R-Line vehicles. If there is no oncoming traffic, High Beam Control (Light Assist), automatically turns on the headlamp high beams above 35 mph on dark roads or poorly lit roads. The high beams will automatically turn off below 18 mph. The Overhead View Camera (Area View), which is a combination of four cameras on the car, provides supplementary information to the driver's view around the vehicle.
Every 2021 Tiguan comes equipped with a bumper to bumper New Vehicle Limited Warranty and Carefree maintenance program. The warranty covers the vehicle for up to four years, or 50,000 miles (whichever comes first), and can be transferred at any time during its remaining duration.
The Carefree Maintenance Program offers scheduled maintenance services for two years or 20,000 mi (whichever comes first), at no additional cost. It can also be transferred to another owner during its remaining duration.
